Which CPU (processor) should I choose?

The CPU (processor) is the heart and brain of your computer. Needless to say, it is one of the most important components of any build.

The number of cores and threads are an indication as to how many different threads of processes can be computed simultaneously. The more, the better your computer will be at multitasking. The frequency (in Hz / GHz) is an indication as to the speed at which each thread will process computations.

Choose the 5-series for cloud-based/web-based work or if your software does not allow for separate processes.

Choose the 9-series for extremely heavy multitasking or computational tasks that can be separated into numerous threads by your software.

Which cooling method is best for me?

The vast majority of cooling in PCs happens through airflow, whether direct or through liquid cooling.

CPU direct airflow cooling (standard) is simply a fan system blowing air through a heatsink attached to the CPU. This is simple, efficient and allows for long continuous operation. It is, however, less silent than liquid cooling.

AIO systems (all-in-one) are a closed-loop liquid-cooling system. A pump circulates the heat from the CPU through liquid into a large radiator cooled by a fan system. This allows for faster cooling (liquid conducts heat better than air), lower fan speeds, and therefore very silent operation. Although the risk of leakage is extremely slim, some people do not wish to take a chance. Also, it is less favorable in continuous (24/7/365) operation.

How much RAM (random access memory) do I need?

The RAM is a “quick” storage space for your processor - see it as a bowl next to your cutting board in your kitchen!

The more RAM available, the more room for data to be fed in and out of your processor. 16Gb is sufficient for basic operations and light work loads. 32 GB is for high-performance computing - and we strongly recommend it unless you need more.

Optimized memory runs at a lower latency or lower voltage (better & more longevity). It is also equipped with higher-grade heatsinks and often “binned” (specific chipsets) components.

How much storage do I need?

The operating system is installed on the main and fastest drive. If you only use web-based / cloud storage, one drive is more than enough. If you store large quantities of data, documents, pictures, videos, etc., you might need extra storage. The quantity and the speed depends on the application, so please give us a call if you are uncertain of your needs.

Do I need a video card (GPU)?

GPUs (graphic processing units) unload the vast majority of the video processing from your CPU, thus accelerating your system (and improving the video processing).

If you use web-based applications, if graphics processing is not required, or if you will not be using multiple high resolution, high-frequency screens, then a graphics card is not needed.

For rendering, video editing, audiovisual encoding, graphics processing or even gaming, a graphics card is highly recommended. Usually, the higher the specs of a video card, the better it is at graphics processing.

Would I ever need a second video card (GPU)?

The short answer: no. Multiple GPUs are for extremely rare cases where multiple 4k-resolution, high frequency displays are used simultaneously or if your work software can handle it. Please contact us for more details or if you need help with this topic.

What operating system (OS) do you pre-install?

Three options are available:

  1. We pre-install Windows 11 Home which is sufficient for the large majority of users
  2. Windows 11 Pro is available for specific professional features, advanced networking capabilities and security features
  3. No operating system. If you wish to install Linux, or other operating systems, we will configure and test your unit in the BIOS only before shipping it out to you.

Are your computers loud?

All PCs we build are very silent. Whenever possible, we use large diameter, low speed fans to move the same quantity of air at lower speeds, therefore with lower volume as to not disturb your silence.

The extra silent option is for users who have extremely silent surroundings and will not be using headphones. This option includes a noise cancelling case, layout and less air flow. Please note, computer may run slightly warmer due to this.

Can my PC have fancy lights?

Absolutely! Although this is exclusively aesthetic, we can make your computer look like a light show. We use RGB-equipped components with addressable headers so that you can customize the lighting as it pleases you. Please note, although rare, some lighting effects may cause electrical whine.

Will the computer be Wifi-ready?

We build PC’s without Wifi as a standard. If you need it, please add the Wifi option so we may install a Wifi 6 (or better) card or select a mobo (motherboard) that comes equipped with Wifi.

Can I get Bluetooth® on my computer?

Yes, simply choose the Bluetooth® option and we will equip your PC with Bluetooth® 5 (on-board or adapter, depending on other choices).

Which monitor should I choose, and how many?

Selecting a monitor (or monitors!) is a question of two key factors: use and taste.

Explaining use:
Which resolution do you need? 1080p is what we call HD (this is the lowest resolution we offer). Higher resolutions are available (2K, 4K, 8K) and are usually needed for high resolution viewing or editing for high-res movies/videos and the like.

Explaining taste:
Some people are accustomed to flat panel monitors, some people prefer curved monitors because they provide a more immersive experience since they follow the eyeball’s curvature. This element is exclusively taste and layout based.

Now, how many monitors?
If you are often multitasking, or need to view a document while working on another one, you might want to consider two monitors. Add a third monitor if you multi-task heavily or are often on web meetings WHILE multitasking. If you are uncertain, please contact us, we will gladly help.

All our 1080p monitors are 75Hz or more (120HZ, 144Hz, 165Hz) refresh rate so that you do not perceive any screen tearing. More than two monitors will require a discrete GPU (graphics card/video card). High resolution multi-screen layouts also require a discrete GPU.

Which mouse should I choose?

Wired mice have a rapid response, but wireless mice have evolved greatly and they no longer lag like they used to. Wireless mice also have the benefit of decluttering your workspace. The shortcoming of wireless mice however is battery replacing, or mouse charging. Gaming mice have superior response and customizable “dpi” (dots per inch - linear). You can often customize the speed your mouse pointer travels on screen and even switch it on the fly. They also often tend to have programmable buttons to execute macros (a macro is a small number of sequential operations activated by one click or button). Gaming mice are used for (yes gaming, and) applications where you zoom and unzoom and where you want to change the precision of what you are doing with the mouse: i.e. fast-travel, then slow travel for higher precision.

Which keyboard should I choose?

As is the case for mice, wired keyboards have a rapid response but wireless keyboards are good as well. Wireless keyboards declutter your working space but need battery management or charging. Mechanical keyboards have a significantly different feel than standard keyboards. Key pressing grants the user a very clear feedback, thus confirming that you did indeed press the button. This is often used by typists, gamers, or users who need to type a lot since the feedback pushes your fingers back away from the keyboard (thus reducing the effort a bit on the very long run). Many options exist, ranging from very loud, very clicky, high-pressure required keys, to linear, no-click options. Please note, all mechanical keyboards are louder than modern standard keyboards.

Which webcam is best for me?

If you exclusively use your webcam for web meetings, a standard one will do, these usually run at 720p or 1080p and have OK quality audio and video - with no hassle.

If you broadcast, stream, make videos you publish or any other such activity, you should definitely get a Pro or high-resolution webcam.

What is an optical drive and which one should I choose?

This is indeed a legacy category. Optical drives allow you to read or make your own media (CDs, DVDs, Blu-Ray discs). If you need a DVD reader/writer, Blu-Ray reader/writer or such, please click on your choice below. If not, you should disregard this category as a general rule.

What are flash card readers and which one should I choose?

This is again a legacy category. If you need to access flash cards (such as SD, microSD, CF or other types), one of the options below is required. As these readers use the same protocol as USB, they will take up one of the USB internal ports. This could be a problem for USB 3.0 card readers. Please contact us for USB 3.0 card reader options.

Why would I need a standalone audio card?

Standalone audio cards are usually for audiophiles or for users who need powerful audio processing capabilities, such as in the music industry or any audio editing for high-end audio applications (movies, special effects, video gaming audio editing, etc.) Onboard audio processing, on the motherboard, is usually sufficient for most users.

Should I buy speakers, and if so which ones?

Audio (sound) coming out of a monitor is usually pretty low quality. If you do not use headphones 100% of the time, we recommend speakers.

High-quality speakers also provide simulated or actual surround sound.

  • 2.1 speaker system has two speakers (left and right) and a subwoofer (for low frequency sounds). Surround is simulated.
  • 5.1 speaker system has a front-speaker, two side speakers (left and right), two rear speakers (left and right) and a subwoofer. Surround is actual or simulated.
